Project overview
JPS acted as Structural Engineer for Old Coleham, a new-build residential development in Shrewsbury.
Constructed on the site of a former car park adjacent to the river, the scheme comprises a four-storey apartment building utilising a steel and concrete composite frame.
The project required careful consideration of challenging ground conditions and foundation design to enable the successful redevelopment of the brownfield site and deliver high-quality residential accommodation within a constrained urban setting.
The engineering challenge
The scheme presented several challenges, including:
- Developing a structural solution for a four-storey residential development on a former brownfield site.
- Addressing challenging ground conditions associated with the former car park location.
- Designing foundations adjacent to the river while ensuring long-term stability.
- Coordinating a steel and concrete composite frame to meet structural and architectural requirements.
- Delivering an efficient structure within a constrained urban environment.
The engineering solution
JPS was responsible for:
- Providing full structural engineering services for the development.
- Designing the four-storey steel and concrete composite framed structure.
- Developing foundation solutions suitable for the site’s ground conditions.
- Incorporating ground improvement techniques to support the foundation design.
- Coordinating the structural design to facilitate the successful delivery of the residential development.
The outcome
- Successful redevelopment of a former car park into a modern residential apartment scheme.
- A robust and efficient steel and concrete composite structure delivering long-term performance.
- Ground improvement measures that enabled the effective support of the building foundations.
- High-quality residential accommodation in a prominent riverside location.
- A sustainable reuse of a brownfield site, contributing to the regeneration of the local area.
