Project overview
This two‑phase scheme for Carden Homes transformed a collection of heritage buildings in the Cheshire countryside into a luxury residential development.
Phase 1 focused on the restoration and structural redesign of two former cottages, creating modern three‑storey homes while preserving key historic features.
Phase 2 centred on the conversion of Grade II listed barns into twelve high‑end properties, requiring extensive structural strengthening, remedial works, and a full civil engineering strategy.
Across both phases, JPS delivered comprehensive engineering input to sensitively modernise the buildings while retaining their character and ensuring long‑term structural integrity.
The engineering challenge
The scheme presented several challenges, including:
• Restoring and altering ageing cottage structures to accommodate open‑plan layouts and large glazed openings.
• Preserving and repairing heritage features such as chimneys and original masonry.
• Converting Grade II listed barns with significant structural deterioration.
• Designing replacement floors and roof structures suitable for modern residential use.
• Developing a compliant and efficient drainage strategy for a multi‑plot rural site.
The engineering solution

• Advising on and detailing chimney repair works to conserve heritage elements.
• Full structural and civil engineering design for the conversion of Grade II listed barns into twelve homes.
• Undertaking detailed structural surveys and designing strengthening and remedial works, including new floors and roof structures.
• Developing the site‑wide drainage strategy and detailing plot‑specific drainage solutions.
