Project overview

JPS provided full civil and structural engineering design services for the delivery of Ysgol Gymraeg Croes Atti, a £15.9 million Welsh-medium primary school in Flint, North Wales.

Delivered in partnership with Read Construction, the scheme was designed to achieve Zero Carbon in Operation and provides a modern, sustainable learning environment for current and future generations.

The development comprises a two-storey school building with capacity for 240 pupils, expandable to 420 pupils, alongside a standalone nursery building for 30 children. Working closely with Lovelock Mitchell Architects, Davies Partnership and the wider design team, JPS helped develop an integrated design that optimised building orientation, construction methods and renewable technologies while creating a high-quality educational campus with extensive indoor and outdoor facilities.

The engineering challenge

The scheme presented several challenges, including:

  • Delivering a Zero Carbon in Operation educational facility that met stringent sustainability and energy performance targets.
  • Designing a flexible school capable of accommodating future expansion from 240 to 420 pupils.
  • Coordinating civil and structural engineering solutions within a multidisciplinary design team to achieve the project’s sustainability objectives.
  • Incorporating advanced construction methods and materials to maximise energy efficiency and building performance.
  • Integrating extensive outdoor learning, recreation and sports facilities within the site layout while managing drainage and landscape requirements.
  • Delivering a modern educational campus that balanced operational efficiency, pupil wellbeing and long-term resilience.

The engineering solution

JPS was responsible for:

  • Providing full civil and structural engineering design services for the £15.9 million development.
  • Working collaboratively with Lovelock Mitchell Architects and Davies Partnership to establish the optimum building layout, orientation and structural solutions.
  • Designing infrastructure and engineering solutions that supported the project’s Zero Carbon in Operation objectives.
  • Developing structural designs compatible with advanced structural insulated panel (SIP) construction systems to maximise energy efficiency.
  • Delivering civil engineering solutions to support the site’s hard and soft landscaping, drainage features and external facilities.
  • Designing engineering infrastructure for a comprehensive campus that includes a nursery building, Multi Use Games Area (MUGA), sports pitches, natural play areas and a rain garden.
  • Supporting a future-proofed design strategy that allows the school to expand should future demand increase.

The outcome

  • The project achieved its ambition of providing a Zero Carbon in Operation learning environment.
  • The school offers high-quality educational facilities for 240 pupils, with capacity for future expansion to 420 pupils.
  • Advanced construction techniques and energy-efficient materials contribute to exceptional building performance and reduced operational carbon emissions.
  • The development provides extensive outdoor learning, sport and recreational facilities that enhance pupil wellbeing and educational opportunities.
  • Ysgol Gymraeg Croes Atti has created a sustainable, future-ready educational environment that supports both the local community and the continued growth of Welsh-medium education in North Wales.
