Ysgol Treferthyr, Criccieth
Circa £8m New Build

JPS are assisting Wynne Construction with the delivery of Ysgol Treferthyr, a new Welsh primary school in Criccieth, Gwynedd. JPS provided full civil and structural engineering services including the steel frame and the foundations, design of SUDs features and complex ground modelling. JPS also contributed to off-site highways improvement works.

The new build school will provide space for 150 pupils, an increase from the previous site’s capacity of 119. It will include six classrooms, a hall, kitchen, and multipurpose room as part of the development. The school is funded by the Welsh Government through the Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme and Cyngor Gwynedd. It is scheduled to finish by September 2024. Upon completion, pupils will move from the school in the centre of Criccieth to the new site, which sits along the A497 on the western approach to the town.

During the early design phases of the project, JPS’s ability to easily quantify design options within a 3D model environment allowed us to provide a number of different foundation and earthworks design options. This ultimately gave the contractor more scope to guide the design team towards the most cost-effective and low carbon design solution.

The new school design incorporates a range of sustainability strategies including passive solar gain, natural ventilation, photovoltaic panels and ASHP’s. It is hoping to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating upon completion.
